From this former field, topsoil has been removed for commercial redeployment elsewhere leaving a parched canvas of clay and weeds upon which the land use designs of urban planners are laid: here landscaping surrounding a new GO Train station parking lot, ostensibly enables more environmentally sustainable movement of the burgeoning population of local commuters in and out of Toronto’s urban core. In an unintended consequence, with the loss of yet another chunk of farmland, residents become incrementally less able to rely on locally grown food, and instead grow more dependent on food imported much greater distances from Latin America, the southwestern United States and Asia.
